SR 305 DIESEL : Operation & Advantages A diesel engine is a reciprocal, internal combustion engine which differs from gasoline engine because it eliminates Electrical Ignition (no spark-plugs, magnetos, wiring…) thanks to Compression Ignition. As a consequence, an SMA engine has 70% less parts than a conventional O-470 engine. The SMA SR-305 engine is a 4-stroke, 4-cylinder, Opposite Piston engine, which is cooled by air and oil, same as any of the familiar engines which are dominant in General Aviation since the end of World War II. It is even simpler to maintain. Click here to visit the SMA website. Normal Operation ü Single lever to adjust power ü No manual propeller pitch control: The pitch is automatically adjusted to best configuration ü No manual mixture control
The ECU adjusts the max power to ambient conditions and ü Maintains engine within limitations ü Maintains idle speed (800 rpm) ü Prevents engine overspeed
Increased Safety & Reliability ü Integrated electronic engine control ü Manual back-up mode ü No magneto or spark plugs ü No detonation, or risk of return flame ü JetA Fuel is far less combustible than Avgas: No risk of fire on board ü Minimal, negligible CO emissions
Improved Performance ü Maintain 200 hp up to 10,000 ft ü Increased range / payload ü Increased endurance
Targeted TBO 3000 hours thanks to : ü Diesel technology ü Engine designed from scratch for aviation use ü Materials chosen ü Reduced propeller speed ü No reduction gear box
